OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS / EDITORIAL DESCRIPTION:

What happens when love becomes a secret and freedom begins to feel like a crime in Haiti?

Las dos caras de la jaula: El eco de una sonrisa prohibida is a psychological fiction and urban romantic drama novel of Haitian and Caribbean origin, written by Dieudelin Robert between 2017 and 2019. Inspired by real-life events of the 21st century in Haiti and the Caribbean, the work develops a story of young Haitian love, emotional manipulation, domestic control, persecution and resistance against an oppressive environment.

At the center of the story are PrincessRose and Guerlain, two young Haitian-Caribbean people whose feelings are born spontaneously and sincerely, but who soon must face a reality much more complex than their own emotions. While PrincessRose tries to preserve her innocence and find spaces to decide about her life in a coastal Caribbean neighborhood with colorful classic architecture, palm trees and the blue sea, Guerlain represents serenity and determination of someone who wishes to defend his feelings without resorting to violence.

Behind an apparent family hospitality hides Doña Dina, a Haitian double-personality figure whose need for control progressively transforms the young woman's environment into an invisible prison. What initially seems like a discreet sentimental relationship ends up becoming a conflict marked by distrust, public provocations, harassment on roads and alleys, rumors at a music festival and the consequences of a constantly threatened freedom.

With the complicity of Bebeto, a loyal Haitian friend who plays a fundamental role in decisive moments, Guerlain goes through different stages of a conflict that tests his character, principles and future. Between clandestine encounters, rumors, musical scenarios and unexpected confrontations, the story builds an atmosphere of tension where appearances can hide deeply destructive intentions. The narrative moves towards a more reflective dimension when time, distance and personal decisions begin to define the fate of its protagonists, from Guerlain's move to the city in 2019 to the painful present.
