The Amazon "independent publishing" service, known as Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), was created in November 2007.

It was originally launched under the name Digital Text Platform. The launch coincided with the presentation of the first Kindle e-reader device. The platform revolutionized self-publishing, allowing independent authors to publish their own e-books and, subsequently, also paperback books (via print-on-demand), making them available to a vast global audience.
