Berkley Books began as an American independent publishing company in 1955, briefly named Chic News Company. The company was bought in 1965 by G. P. Putnam's Sons and became an imprint. The Penguin Group purchased Putnam in 1996. As at 2022, Berkley is an imprint of Penguin.
