Australian writer who is widely regarded as one of the most important English-language novelists of the 20th century. In 1973, he was awarded the Noble Prize in Literature. He won the Miles Franklin Award twice: in 1957 for Voss (1957), and in 1961 for Riders in the Chariot (1961).
